A Solo European Adventure

My 27-night European adventure will begin in Copenhagen, Denmark, where I'll spend four nights exploring one of Scandinavia's most vibrant and charming capitals. During my stay, I'll take a day trip across the Øresund Bridge to Malmö, Sweden, adding a second country to the journey before the real adventure begins.

From Copenhagen, I'll board a train bound for Hamburg, Germany, for a three-night stay. While there, I'll make a special trip to Schleswig, the homeland of my father's family. Researching my family heritage in the region promises to be one of the most meaningful experiences of the trip, and perhaps I'll even have the opportunity to meet a distant relative or two.

The next leg of the journey carries me through the scenic German countryside and into Austria. I'll spend three nights in Innsbruck, a spectacular city nestled in the heart of the Austrian Alps. Famous for hosting the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, as well as the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics, Innsbruck combines rich history, stunning mountain scenery, and alpine charm unlike anywhere else.

From one dramatic mountain landscape to another, I'll continue south to Bolzano, Italy, for three nights. This medieval city sits in a valley surrounded by rolling vineyards and serves as a gateway to the breathtaking Dolomites. With its unique blend of Italian and Austrian influences, Bolzano promises unforgettable scenery, culture, and cuisine.

A short train ride will then bring me to Verona, where I'll spend five nights immersed in one of Italy's most romantic and historic cities. Home to the second-largest Roman amphitheater in the country, Verona hosts world-class concerts and opera performances within its ancient walls. Best known as the setting of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the city offers endless opportunities for exploration. While there, a day trip to Bologna is a must. Whether as a day trip or an overnight excursion, its remarkable collection of medieval and Renaissance architecture is certain to leave a lasting impression on my soul.

Just minutes away by train lies Sirmione, where I'll spend three nights on the shores of Lake Garda. Often called the "Pearl of Lake Garda," this picturesque peninsula town beautifully blends medieval architecture with ancient Roman history. Its charming streets, lakeside views, and relaxed atmosphere make it the perfect place to slow down and savor the journey.

After returning to Verona, I'll catch a short flight to Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia. Here I'll have three days to unwind while exploring rugged mountain landscapes, historic neighborhoods, and stunning waterfront vistas. Sardinia's unique culture and natural beauty promise a memorable change of pace.

The final destination of this solo adventure is Barcelona, Spain. This cosmopolitan city is renowned for its extraordinary art, architecture, and Mediterranean energy. Highlights include the magnificent Basilica de la Sagrada Família, one of the world's most iconic landmarks. During my stay, I'll also venture into France for a day trip to Perpignan, where I'll visit the Gothic and Romanesque Palace of the Kings of Majorca.

As the journey comes to an end, I'll have traveled through seven countries, crossed mountain ranges, explored medieval towns, uncovered family history, and experienced some of Europe's most remarkable cuisine, landscapes and cultures. It promises to be a solo adventure filled with discovery, reflection, and unforgettable memories.
